
Being everywhere, knowing everyone, and coming to work first and leaving last may be a great networking strategy if you have a specific goal. But beware of being seen as office furniture – everyone knows it’s there, but nobody really cares. Be unique, have something special about you, something identifiable, that others value. Like “She’s constantly calming us down when we are panicking”, or “He always connects me with the right resources.”
Being vocal is a sure way to be noticed. But if you always have something to say, people stop hearing you, kind of like a radio station that is playing in the background. If you always show your support related to a specific strategy, people will associate you with it. Or maybe you can choose speak if you see a possible solution. Think about what you want to be remembered for, what impression you want to leave people with. Be very deliberate about what you say and when you say it.
Being different for the sake of being different will definitely grab people’s attention. But what’s the point? You are risking that by the time you really do something note-worthy people will be tired of you showing off.
Think of other people you notice. What do you notice them for? If you admire them, how can you mimic what they do? If you find them annoying, what do you want to avoid doing? Being known as a positive team–player or a breath of fresh air is way better than being known as a naysayer or a whiner.
You know you are visible in the right way if people say things like: “Oh, I know I can always depend on him when it comes to X”, or “Did you know she came up with that? I’d love to have her on my team!”
You may not really be on people’s radar for a long time and all of a sudden everyone knows about that one thing that had a huge value. Focus on what you want to achieve and go for it. Be patient. If you do it well and stand confidently next to your results, people WILL notice you.
Enhance your visibility by doing something that will make people want to know more about you. Visibility is not the goal in itself. It is a result of the impact you create.
