As a mom, whose responsibility is to keep the house in order, I’m reminded day by day that chaos is way more natural than order. If so, we have a choice – fighting it or embracing it (No, kids, by “embracing” I do NOT mean “ignoring”. Sorry!).
How does this relate to your career? Well, as I work with my coaching clients, they often look for the clear, practical, and realistic plans – kind of like straight lines. But imagine a plane flying across the Atlantic Ocean. Keeping a straight line is hard work! The plane needs to keep a certain speed in order to stay up there. It needs to adjust to the winds, the changes of the atmospheric pressure, the temperature range…
The same applies to our career journey. You know that even keeping your career going the way it’s been going so far is not an easy task. So, when you are creating a new goal or a new plan, it’s more realistic and practical to expect a crooked path that allows you to test your assumptions, to explore dead ends, to follow an inspiring, unexpected trail.
Buckle up and expect hard work. Persistence in following your intuition is the key. Expect fear, doubt, criticism, and hesitations – like forces trying to take a plane away from its path. Keep learning as you go and adjusting your route.
If you don’t really know where you are headed, enjoy this moment, look around and choose from the available options. As you take a step, new pathways will appear. Eventually, no matter where you end up, you’ll know that your journey was worth it, because you chose every step based on what you believe in, what’s important to you, and what matters to you.
Even if you do know where you are going, embrace the fact that there may be many different ways to get there. You don’t need to follow other people’s footsteps. Create your own journey. Enjoy traveling towards your goal. When you expect obstacles, delays, and detours, you see them as a part of your adventure – as funny stories you can tell in years to come.
