Lights, Camera, … Hmmm, let me think…

movie

People like movies for the action, the plot, the story, and the drama. What’s your favorite movie? Imagine that instead of watching it, you would only be able to listen to the director’s ideas about what he’d like to create, the ideas about how he may be able to do it, analysis of what others did, what he’ll need to figure out before he begins, his worries about how things may go wrong, and a never-ending list of things to prepare for the actual shooting. This would go on and on without any production whatsoever. Would you enjoy it as much as the movie? I guess not.

And yet, that’s what we are often projecting on the screen of our brain as we’re creating our own movie – our life, our career, our hopes for the future. We get a great idea that inspires us, we start dreaming about how cool it would be to make it happen, and then we get stuck for various reasons. We overanalyze, we doubt ourselves, we keep preparing ourselves, and we constantly create obstacles (excuses) to keep us from taking action.

Movies are made scene by scene. Nobody expects the first take to be the perfect one. But without trying something, anything, you will never know what would work the best at the end. Maybe more light, a different angle, a shorter dialogue, less props in the background…you can’t figure it out without taking an action.

What if you tried to see your actions as takes on a movie set? You do your best, re-evaluate what works and what doesn’t, and adjust your next action based on that. You can always make it better later. You can add music, people, scenes… it’s way more fun getting down and dirty than just creating a big mental movie. Any action is better than no action and you know it. So, what’s the next scene you’ll be working on?
